Dr. Roy Sanders- “Medication Management of Autism/Asperger Syndrome”
Dr. Sanders will be giving an overview of medications commonly prescribed to treat the symptoms of Autism/Asperger Syndrome, possible side effects, do’s and don’ts, and questions parents and professionals should ask their prescribing physician.
In 2002, Dr. Sanders accepted a position with the DeKalb County Community Service Board in Georgia to help develop a comprehensive system of care for the children of DeKalb County. In this process, he has been affiliated with the juvenile court system and the foster care system in DeKalb County. He was subsequently asked to join the faculty of the Marcus Institute and has been working to develop comprehensive psychiatric services for children and adults with developmental disabilities.
Dr. Sanders is devoted to developing a comprehensive and humane system of care for children and adults with developmental disabilities. He is active in several community organizations aimed at making full inclusion a reality in our community. He is also the father of a son with Pervasive Developmental Disorder and Mental Retardation. He is the recent author of “How to Talk to Parents About Autism” published by WWNorton Professional Books, 2008.
Dr. Lynn Adams- “Teaching Social Skills to Children with Autism and Asperger Syndrome”
Dr. Adams will be discussing the social and communication concerns exhibited by children with Autism and Asperger Syndrome and how they warrant intervention in a group setting. This presentation will allow the learner to define the parameters of a successful session including those activities that will allow for the greatest improvement in the social setting of the child…..school!
Lynn Adams is currently the Autism Specialist for the Effingham County School System in coastal Georgia. She was a university professor for 15 years before returning to the public school system. She completed her doctorate at The University of Tennessee – Knoxville, and the MS and BS from Florida State University. Her area of interest and expertise includes social-communication in autism and Asperger syndrome. She is a past President and Fellow of the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Virginia (SHAV). She is the author of Group Intervention for Asperger syndrome: A Social Skill Curriculum and Autism and Asperger Syndrome: Busting the myths (Plural Publishing). Her third book on parenting children with an autism spectrum disorder will be released in late 2008. She is a frequent presenter at the local, state, regional and national levels.
